WHY 5:1 CBD:THC Ratios Are The Most Diverse Ratio

Reading Time: 3 min 40 sec

You Spoke, We Listened

After much anticipation, we have launched a 5:1 CBD:THC ratio gummy line. Over the past few years, many of our patients have asked us to come out with a new product. These requests almost always come from patients who are looking for us to provide a CBD product that delivers the same quality that they have found in our THC line. As other companies brought CBD products to market, we held back because we wanted to create something that delivered the effects patients are looking for.

We didn’t want to rush something to market that failed to meet our core values of impact, consistency, and excellence. Instead, we took our time, pouring our efforts into research and development to create a CBD product that delivered the results our patients expect from any of our products. By looking at the available scientific research and combining that information with what we were seeing in the field working with patients, several trends started to become apparent.

Options, So Many Options

When looking at the options available to medical cannabis patients, you start to see that the options are not as plentiful as one would imagine. On one end, patients have THC dominant products that typically have a THC to CBD ratio of 20:1. This is the category that our current THC line would fall into and is an excellent option for patients who are regular consumers of cannabis, who have a high tolerance, and who enjoy the psychoactive effects of THC.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are CBD dominant products that usually have a CBD:THC ratio of between 40:1 and 20:1, and some products that contain no THC at all. This is the category where the newest patients typically first go who do not have any experience with cannabis. They may be nervous to try cannabis because they grew up believing the propaganda of “Reefer Madness”, or they can’t consume THC for medical or legal reasons.

These two domains of cannabis products have dominated the medical and recreational markets since it’s beginning. Oftentimes, patients are left with a dichotomy that doesn’t work for what they need, forced to choose one or the other, neither providing the effect they desired. These are typically the people who need something stronger than just CBD but do not want to be overwhelmed by the potent psychoactivity of a THC dominant product. This patient may have pain, anxiety, or insomnia that CBD alone is not sufficient for.

This patient doesn’t mind mild euphoria, relaxation, and the occasional bought of laughter or munchies; they just don’t want to be leveled entirely, filled with anxiety or paranoia; they just want to find relief. Oftentimes, these are the people who go for the occasional product that is listed as “balanced” with a 1:1 CBD:THC ratio and still find it to be too strong. What options are left for those of us that fall into this category? When we look at the current science of cannabis, this problem becomes crystal clear.

We Believe in Science

A 1:1 CBD:THC product listed as “balanced” makes intuitive sense, but sometimes our intuition can lead us down the wrong path. Science, as a discipline, doesn’t trust intuition and instead looks at data to inform its decisions. Similarly,  we don’t believe in just following convention, we believe in looking at the available scientific research, and that is precisely what we did when creating our 5:1 CBD:THC ratio product line. CBD itself is an impotent molecule, while THC is very potent. The minimum effective dose of CBD was 20mg for most adults studied according to a recent review of CBDs safety. When you combine that with the fact that the minimum effective dose of THC is between 2.5mg to 5mg for edible cannabis, it is clear to see why 1:1 is anything but “balanced”.

This may come as a surprise to some of you reading who thought that CBD reduced the psychoactivity of THC at any dose. While again, this is the intuitive knowledge our industry has parrotted for some time, our intuition fails here too. A recent study published in 2019 found that small amounts of CBD in the presence of THC actually increased psychoactivity. The researchers included that CBD needed to outweigh THC, so to speak to reduce its mind-altering effects with a 400:1 CBD:THC ratio, completely eliminating psychoactivity.

Bringing it All Together

This information was what we used when deciding what ratio to make our 5:1 CBD:THC ratio product line. Each piece in our 300mg packages contains 20mg of CBD and 4mg of THC, an ideal “balance” for those looking to maximize the medical benefits of cannabis while also keeping the psychoactivity of THC in check. As we are fond of saying, Know Your Dose! We always recommend that patients start with half a gummy, which would be 10mg of CBD and 2mg of THC. This is below the active dose for most adults, but some people are more sensitive to the effects of cannabis than others. You can always take more, you can’t take less!

Final Thoughts

We hope you now understand why we created this product and gained some insight into the thought that went into it. We believe that impact, consistency, and excellence should never be compromised, no matter the perceived value of making a short cut. We were founded by working with patients, and they are the driving force behind everything we do.

Our 5:1 CBD:THC ratio can benefit the body in a variety of ways, which you can read about here.
